Five ways in which I will prepare myself to be culturally responsive towards this family:
- Research and locate local agencies that support families from Ethiopia. Visit these agencies to to learn more about the culture and resources that may be provided for families.
- Reach out to the family prior to them joining the program to begin an open line of communication.
- Locate and put in place any resources needed like translators.
- Prepare staff and the program environment to be welcoming culturally to this family.
- Conduct research to increase my knowledge and my staff's knowledge around the Ethiopian culture.
A brief statement describing in what ways I hope that these preparations will benefit both myself and the family:
I think preparation to work with families from different cultures is extremely important. This will allow myself and staff to be fully aware of the families initial beliefs and values which I believe will allow for a relationship to be built. A relationship will allow the program to help the children have the best experience, support the family as much as possible, and ultimately help the staff feel successful. We work with different cultures on a daily basis but, for the most part, we work with the same consistent cultures allowing us the opportunity to learn. When we have families come to our programs from new cultures, we want to make sure to familiarize ourselves to allow for the best experience.
Hello Rachel
ReplyDeleteI agree we must bring knowledge to all of the children who are in our lives. We must be sure we let others who are not aware of families coming here from other countries and do not know anything about our culture, and we do not know anything about theirs. The one good thing that we have to support us is the internet and Libraries. We can go anywhere in the world with a book from the library and anywhere in the world on the internet and this is certainly an advantage for us living in the United States. Some counties do not have access to internet or it is too expensive for them to have service.
