For the past few weeks I have been researching The Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) website. The first section I found pertinent to my current professional development is the "Our Programs" section. This section introduces the different programs the Harlem Children's Zone provides. I think this is pertinent to my professional development currently because I am learning about programs that are effective and address current issues and trends in early childhood. There is also a "News" and "Blog" section that has different articles and posts about different aspects of HCZ. I think this is helping me learn about programs that are for families from many different backgrounds and the extra supports they may need.
In the "About Us Section" you can find a documents and publications section that provides many different resources. There are documents under a section saying "Sharing the HCZ Model" that I believe show different perspectives and include economic, neuroscientists, and politicians thoughts to support change in the early childhood field. I also think the HCZ model in general shows what advocates for early childhood can do when they are following best practice. You can see throughout the website that there is economic, neuroscientists, and politician perspectives affecting all of the information presented.
"Baby College" is the main insight I had from the HCZ website for trends in early childhood. This program basically works with parents and guardians when their child is not quite born yet or they are in their first year. I think working with families early in a child's life is what we should all be providing families. This should be a trend we should all join in. Educating and helping families build a community will in the long run help each and every child be more successful.
The whole premises of HCZ is bringing the success of the children and the community together as they believe they go hand in hand. I feel like this is something that made me think differently. I don't think I have ever focused on the community as much as I should when working in a school or program working with children and families. They really do go hand in hand and for children to be successful, the community has to come together and support families and children.

The "Baby College' section that you mentioned is very interesting. The method of providing information and support to parents before they even give birth should prove to be effective. Also, I do agree with your comments about being more in touch the community. It is difficult to help mold a child in the right direction without being in touch with the things that are happening around the child..
ReplyDeleteYou are definitely right! Focusing on the community as a whole is very important, because they build and work together. If a community is strong, then so are the children that come out of it. It is important for parents to take the time to work with their children to help them become academically successful.
